Kiawah Island, S.C. – The No. 5 Virginia women’s golf team was tied with Duke for third place after the first day of competition at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, S.C. The Cavaliers finished the first 36 holes at 32-over 608, shooting 16-over 304 in each of their rounds in windy conditions at Turtle Point Golf Course.

UVA was led by senior Beth Lillie (Fullerton, Calif.) who shot 5-over 149 and is tied for ninth place when play was suspended due to darkness with three teams still on the course and unable to complete their second rounds. She posted scores of 77 and 72.

Junior Riley Smyth (Cary, N.C.) was in 17th place at 7-over 151. She had rounds of 72 and 79. Lillie and Smyth’s even-par rounds of 72 were the best by any UVA player on the day.

Sophomore Virginia Bossi (Como, Italy) was tied for 21st at 8-over 152. She shot 78 and 74. Freshman Jennifer Cleary (Wilmington, Del.) was in 35th place at 156 while sophomore Celeste Valinho (Jacksonville, Fla.) was tied for 45th at 159.

The second round will resume Monday at 8:30 a.m. and will be followed by the final round of play.
