GREENSBORO, Ga. – Senior WeiWei Gao (Cebu, Philippines) equaled his career low score by shooting 4-under 68 to lead the Virginia men’s golf team during the first round of the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga. The Cavaliers posted a team score of 3-over 291 to finish the opening day of play in seventh place in the 16-team field. Georgia Tech grabbed the early lead at 5-under 283.

Gao is tied with Louisiana Tech’s James Swash for second place. They are two strokes behind tournament leader Connor McKay of Middle Tennessee State.

After playing his first five holes at even par, Gao piled up five birdies on his next seven holes to race up the leaderboard. He played his final six holes at 1-over par.

UVA sophomores Chris Fosdick (Middlefield, Conn.) and Pietro Bovari (Milano, Italy) are tied for 34th place after shooting 2-over 74. Senior Jimmie Massie (Lynchburg, Va.) is in 43rd place at 75 and freshman George Duangmanee (Fairfax, Va.) is 57th with a score of 76. Junior Jack Montague (Manakin-Sabot, Va.), competing as an individual, also posted a round of 75.
