CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 7 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (8-5, 3-5 ACC) dropped the first of two games at No. 1 North Carolina (13-0, 7-0 ACC), 20-8 on Friday afternoon at Dorrance Field.

Sophomore Kiki Shaw (Owings Mills, Md.) had a hat trick to lead the Cavaliers. Junior Annie Dyson (Alexandria, Va.) had two goals. Senior Taylor Regan (Larchmont, N.Y.), redshirt junior Ashlyn McGovern (Phoenix, Md.) and freshman Maggie Bostain (Richmond, Va.) each had one goal. Bostain and junior Lillie Kloak (Ridgewood, N.J.) had assists.

North Carolina led in shots (31-24) and ground balls (12-7). UVA had the edge in saves (7-6) and draw controls (17-13) but committed nine turnovers to six for the Tar Heels.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Virginia got on the board when Shaw scored at the 27:49 mark after two-straight goals for UNC to start the game. UNC scored two more goals before McGovern notched a goal at 24:09 to make it 4-2, UNC. Shaw scored a second goal in the first half as UVA trailed 5-3 at the 18:09 mark. North Carolina closed out the first half on an 8-0 run to lead 13-3 at the half.

Shaw started the scoring in the second half, completing her hat trick, to cut it to 13-4. Regan scored to halt a 3-0 run for the Tar Heels. Bostain scored her goal at the 18:03 mark to make it 17-6. Dyson scored back-to-back goals to close the game after another 3-0 run for UNC.

NOTES

  • Shaw’s three goals were a career high.
  • Dyson had multiple goals for the fourth time this season.
  • Freshman Aubrey Williams (Purcellville, Va.) led the team with six draw controls.
