Hoos Remain in Striking Distance at NCAA Regional
KINGSTON SPRING, Tenn. – The No. 33 Virginia men’s golf team is in eighth place after the second round of play at the NCAA Regional in Kingston Springs, Tenn. The Hoos remain in contention for one of the regional’s five berths to the NCAA Championships. Thanks to a round of 2-under 282, UVA is just five shots out of fifth place.
The Cavaliers’ two-day total stands at 3-over 571. Charlotte and Clemson are currently tied for fifth place entering Wednesday’s final round of competition at 2-under 566. San Diego State used a second-round score of 8-under 276 to take the lead with a 36-hole total of 11-under 557. Vanderbilt is in second place at 559, Arkansas is third at 563 and NC State is fourth at 565.
UVA sophomore Pietro Bovari led the team for the second consecutive day. He shot 3-under 68 on the par-71 Golf Club of Tennessee course to move up to a tie for third place at 4-under 138. Bovari pieced together five birdies and two bogeys during his second time around the circuit.
Seniors Andrew Orischak and WeiWei Gao are tied for 28th overall at 1-over 143. Orischak shot 72 while Gao carded a 71 on Tuesday.
Freshman George Duangmanee shot 72 to make a four-stroke improvement on his opening round score and moved up to 53rd place at 148. Fellow freshman Chris Fosdick shot even par 71 and stands 56th at 150.
The third round of the 54-hole tournament gets underway at 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday. The Cavaliers will tee off at 9:25 a.m. ET from the first tee while paired with Kent State and Houston. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
