CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Under the direction of first-year head coach Shannon Wells, the University of Virginia Volleyball team swept Norfolk State in a friendly exhibition match in Memorial Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers won 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 before both teams mutually agreed to play fourth and fifth sets.  

The Cavalier offense saw nine hitters register at least one kill, including Laila Rogers, who posted a team-high eight kills. Setter Ashley Le dished out a match-high 26 assists. Kristen Leland was tabbed the starting libero before Madison Morey switched into the contrasting uniform to open the third. Leland led the team with eight digs in the match. 

Virginia made a statement late in the second set. After trailing 20-22 in game No. 2, the Cavaliers tallied five straight points to close out the set and increase its lead to 2-0. Virginia capitalized on a pair of 3-0 runs in the third before solidifying Saturday’s sweep. 

Up next, Virginia will have its season opener against Maryland on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Maryland Invitational (Aug. 27-28) in College Park, Md. The Cavaliers will close out its opening weekend against Hofstra (10 a.m.) and Central Connecticut State (4:30 p.m.) on Saturday. All three matches are expected to stream on Big Ten Network +.
