CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 11 Virginia field hockey team (6-2, 1-1 ACC) hosts No. 21 Old Dominion (5-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Turf Field in Charlottesville, Va.

NOTING THE CAVALIERS

  • Virginia is in the midst of seven straight games against ranked opponents. After playing at No. 5 Louisville and No. 24 Ohio State last weekend, UVA will be at No. 16 Wake Forest (4-3, 1-0 ACC) on Friday before returning to Turf Field to host No. 21 Old Dominion (4-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) on Sunday
  • The Cavaliers are coming off a 3-1 road win on Friday night at No. 16 Wake Forest
  • Wake Forest scored the game’s first goal but UVA added three unanswered to pick up its first conference win of the season
  • Peyton Tollaksen leads the team in both goals (4) and points (8). She is ranked eighth in the ACC in goals per game
  • On Friday night at Wake Forest, both Adele Iacobucci and Noa Boterman scored their third goals of the season
  • Taryn Tkachuk scored her third goal of the season at Ohio State. She is now tied for second on the team in goals (3). She missed the first two games of the season recovering from an injury and only appeared in games three and four to come into the game to take a penalty stroke. She made her debut as a field player on Sept. 10 against Miami and made her first career start at Louisville
  • Freshman back Jans Croon has started every game this season for the Cavaliers and has been a fixture in the backfield
  • Senior back Makayla Gallen scored her first goal of the year, the game-winner against the Buckeyes. The defender deflected in a shot from Cato Geusgens off a penalty corner. It was the first assist of the season for Geusgens, who is also a defender
  • Laura Janssen, UVA’s leading scorer last season, scored her first goal of the year at Wake Forest. It was also a game-winner assisted by Geusgens
  • Cato Geusgens, who made her delayed season debut against Louisville, has assisted on the game-winning goal in two of her three games this year (the third game was a loss)
  • Freshman goalkeeper Tyler Kennedy leads the ACC in goals-against average (0.57) and save percentage (.842)
  • Coming into the weekend, her goals-against average (which was 0.47) ranked third in the nation as did her .875 save percentage
  • When Louisville scored its goal in the second period of last Friday’s game, it snapped a streak of 242 minutes of not allowing a goal by the UVA defense

NOTING OLD DOMINION

  • Old Dominion heads into Sunday’s game having won five of its last six matches
  • The Monarchs exploded for six goals on Friday night in a 7-0 victory against Quinnipiac, taking 21 shots in the game. They scored six of those goals in the first half
  • Marlon de Bruijne leads the team in scoring with six goals this year
  • This is the first of two meetings this season between the two teams. UVA will play at Old Dominion on Sunday, Oct. 17
  • Delphine Le Jeune leads the team with seven points on two goals and three assists
  • Last season’s COVID-19 altered schedule was the first time since 1975 that the two teams did not play one another at least once during the season
