ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The No. 7 Virginia men’s squash team (1-0, 1-0 MASC) opened the 2021-22 season with a 9-0 victory at No. 21 Navy (5-1, 0-1 MASC) on Wednesday (Nov. 10) in Annapolis, Md.

The match was the season-opener for the Cavaliers and the Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference opener for both teams.

Junior Cullen Little, playing at four, picked up the first win of the year, closing out a 13-11, 11-6, 11-3 to give UVA its first point of the season. Junior Aly Hussein picked up a dominant 11-1, 11-3, 11-6 win at the top of the ladder. CJ Baldini and Myles McIntyre also picked up three-game wins in the first wave to put UVA ahead 4-0.

Drew Barr began the second wave with a three-game win at the nine position. The 2019 MASC Player of the Year, Omar El Torkey began the new conference season with an 11-2, 11-8, 11-1 win at position two. Will Holey and Tyler Mackesy victories followed to give UVA an 8-0 lead. Sophomore Taha Dinana closed out the evening with an 11-0, 11-6, 12-14, 11-8 to complete the sweep.

MATCH NOTES

  • This was the collegiate debut of both sophomore Taha Dinana and freshman CJ Baldini
  • Freshman Evan Hajek played his first collegiate match at the 10 position, winning in three games
  • Virginia only played two matches last season due to the COVID pandemic canceling most schools’ squash seasons. Both of the matches were against Navy 

ON THE HORIZON

  • The men’s and women’s teams start a stretch of six straight matches against Ivy League opponents when they play at Yale on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. and at Columbia on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m.
