NEW YORK – The Virginia men’s squash team (1-2) suffered a 6-3 loss at No. 6 Columbia (2-0) on Sunday (Nov. 14) at the SL Green StreetSquash Center in New York, N.Y.
Three third-years picked up victories. Aly Hussein and Omar El Torkey won at the top two positions on the ladder while Cullen Little also picked up a victory at four. Hussein and Little won their matches in three games. El Torkey won his first game 11-7 but dropped his second two 12-10 and 11-1. He battled for an 11-7 win in the fourth before finishing off with an 11-0 win in the decider.
Myles McIntyre and Taha Dinana both came up just short in five-game matches.
FROM HEAD COACH MARK ALLEN
“A second 6-3 loss for the men’s team this weekend, with our Egyptian dynamic duo of Aly Hussein and Omar El Torkey coming through for their team once again. Our third win today came from Cullen Little, who showed some determination and backbone to bounce back from his 3-0 loss yesterday. I was very proud of Cullen’s fighting performance today. And just like yesterday, Taha Dinana and Myles McIntyre were also involved in tough battles and gave their all. Both came up short but left it all on the court and gave their very best effort. But to win a college match you need 5 wins and every match is important, and we need to be competing in every single position, 1 through 9. That’s the biggest takeaway from this weekend’s men’s matches and something we hope to make a crucial improvement upon in the days to come.”
- Both Aly Hussein and Omar El Torkey went 3-0 this week
- Hussein did not lose a game this week playing at the top of the ladder
- Virginia lost its other Ivy League match-up of the week against No. 8 Yale by the same 6-3 score
ON THE HORIZON
- Virginia is on the road again next weekend, playing three more matches against Ivy League opponents, starting with Penn on Friday (Nov. 19), followed by Princeton (Nov. 20) and Cornell (Nov. 21)
