CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s squash team (6-2, 2-0 MASC) picked up two 9-0 wins on Saturday (Dec. 4) at the McArthur Squash Center, topping two Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference opponents, Georgetown (2-1, 0-1 MASC) and Franklin & Marshall (2-3, 1-1 MASC) by that same score.

The Cavaliers won all nine matches against the Hoyas, plus their exhibition, in three games. The Diplomats won one game in the ten matches.

The Cavaliers shook up the lineup for both matches, with several first-year players picking up their first collegiate victories against Georgetown. Nicolina Tessitore and Annabelle MacTaggart played in the top nine for the first time in their careers and earned their first career victories. Caroline Pellegrino played her first collegiate match, debuting at the eight slot and winning 11-2, 11-2, 11-2. Sophomore Griffin Dewey picked up her first collegiate win with an 11-3, 11-0, 11-7 victory at seven. Olivia Walsh played at the top of the ladder for the first time, winning 11-5, 11-1, 11-1 against Zuba Nazir.

Tessitore, Pellegrino and Dewey also won their matches against Franklin & Marshall. Junior Julia Curran played in the top-nine for the first time this season, picking up an 11-4, 11-8, 11-4 win against Pratiksha Mishra.

FROM ASSISTANT COACH GRANT WHITE

“Our women’s team seemed intent on working smarter as well as harder this weekend. A trend I’ve noticed all season long. Going a perfect 27-0 in head-to-head matches, leaves us with massive confidence and momentum as we prepare to welome the Harvard Squash dynasty to our courts. Getting these wins is so important. For each player, one win contains a host of great things she is capable of. And, as each picture is worth a thousand words, it is exciting for her to glimpse the different possible ways our student-athletes are going to make contributions in the years to come. On a final note, special recognition is due to co-captain Emma Jinks, who competed in her fiftieth career match, reaching the milestone in style with a 3-0 win. Emma is a special kind of player and person who has brought this program forward from match 1 to match 50. ”
