CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sophomores Leo Afonso and Holden Brown earned 2021 Virginia Sports Information Directors Men’s Soccer All-State First Team honors the organization announced on Wednesday.
Afonso was one of three forwards to earn first team honors. The Sao Paolo, Brazil native led Virginia with 18 points on eight goals and two assists to earn All-ACC Second Team honors. He was third in the ACC in shots per game (3.27), fourth in goals per game (0.53) and eighth in points (18) and points per game (1.20). Afonso recorded his first career brace in Virginia’s 2-1 win over Boston College. He scored a goal in five of UVA’s last six games.
Brown earned an at-large first team selection after playing every minute in goal for the Cavaliers. The Zionsville, Ind., native recorded three shutouts on the season. He led the ACC in saves (86) and saves per game (4.78) and was second in save percentage (.761). Brown had a career-high 10 saves, and most saves in a single-game in the ACC, against Wake Forest.
VaSID names 44 all-state teams in 23 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
