CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia’s men’s and women’s track and field teams will send a select group of athletes to compete in the Colonial Relays hosted by William & Mary from Thursday, March 31 through Saturday, April 2 at Walter J. Zable Stadium in Williamsburg, Va.

The Virginia women enter the weekend ranked No. 16 in the season’s first national track and field rating index as the Hoos boast five athletes that rank in the top-10 nationally in their respective events. The Cavalier men rank No. 19 in the country with four athletes cracking the nation’s top-10 in an event.

HOO TO WATCH:

Ashley Anumba started her outdoor season with a bang at home when she set a Virginia record in the discus. Her throw soared 56.50m (185’4”) and though it was not Anumba’s personal-best, the mark ranks second in the ACC and seventh in the nation.

Claudio Romero also started the outdoor season with a strong showing at the Virginia Open. The Virginia record holder in the discus set an opening mark of 61.05m (200’3”) in the event that currently ranks fifth in the nation. Romero comes off a 2021 outdoor campaign in which he won gold at the ACC Championships and bronze at the NCAA Championships in the discus.

Maria Deaviz carried momentum from an impressive indoor campaign into the outdoor season. The ACC indoor champion in the shot put recorded a mark of 16.87m (55’4.25”) in her first shot put competition in the outdoor season. The mark currently leads the ACC and ranks 10th in the nation.

Freshman Thomas Dickinson turned in an impressive debut for the Cavaliers at the Virginia Open where he recorded a mark of 60.55m (198’8”) in the javelin. Dickinson ranks in the ACC’s top-10 after just one appearance this season.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Hoos will travel to Durham, N.C. to compete in the Duke Invitational from Thursday, April 7 through Saturday, April 9.
