CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia’s Kate Kelly claimed a bronze medal to highlight action for Cavalier rowers on Friday (July 29) at the 2022 World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Varese, Italy.

Kelly was part of the United States’ women’s four with coxswain that finished third behind Australia (6:44.15) and Italy (6:45.73) with a time of 6:48.35.

Leia Till and her Canadian teammate Maya Meschkuleit finished fourth in the women’s pair behind Greece (6:58.41), Lithuania (7:04.27) and Germany (7:05.69) with a time of 7:08.03.

Lauren Benedict and the United States finished sixth in the women’s quad with a time of 6:28.60. Netherlands (6:18.30), Romania (6:18.88) and Germany (6:20.72) finished first, second and third, respectively.

Izzie Begley added a 20th-place finish in the lightweight single sculls.

Virginia’s Kevin Sauer is serving as head coach of the United States’ women’s eight that will race for gold on Saturday (July 30).

Incoming UVA rowers Cillian Mullen (women’s quad, United States), Elsa Hartman (women’s four, United States), Sarah Bradford (women’s eight, United States) and Riley Richardson (women’s four, Canada) are competing at the World Rowing U19 Championships.
