Cavaliers Competing at the Fall Ranked Spotlight Tournament
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Four members of the Virginia women’s tennis team will be competing in the Fall Ranked Spotlight tournament, being held Sept. 22-25 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
Grad student Julia Adams, juniors Hibah Shaikh and Sara Ziodato and freshman Annabelle Zu will be competing as individuals in the tournament.
The tournament has two 32-player singles compass draws with competition beginning on Friday morning. Players from Arizona State, Auburn, Duke, ETSU, Kansas, Miami, Michigan, North Carolina, NC State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Princeton, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M, UCF, USC and Virginia will be competing. Each team will provide a maximum of four singles players and two doubles teams, with at least two preseason-ranked singles players and one ranked doubles team.
Adams is the No. 15 seed in the tournament and will be competing in the A1 singles draw. Shaikh is a 5-8 seed in the A2 draw. Ziodato and Xu are unseeded and playing in the A2.
Each player will have five singles matches, either in the main draw or in back draws, and three doubles.
There will also be doubles competition with teams paired up in pods of four according to preseason national doubles rankings.
Ziodato and Adams will partner in doubles. Shaikh and Xu will play together,
Play begins with two doubles matches on Thursday evening that will be contested at NC State’s facility in Raleigh. A third doubles match will be played at 9 a.m. on Sunday at Cary Tennis Park.
Singles play begins at 9 a.m. on Friday at Cary Tennis Park.
