CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia third baseman Jake Gelof was named a First Team Preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The Cavalier junior is coming off a historic 2022 season in which he broke the program’s single-season RBI record.

Gelof is one nine ACC baseball players on the CBN All-America team and one of four listed on the first team. Gelof batted .377 with 21 home runs, 65 runs scored and 81 RBI. His 81 RBI last season are the most by any returning college baseball player and his .764 slugging percentage is the second highest of any NCAA returner.

Gelof garnered All-America honors from six different publications last season and was a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy as well as the Golden Spikes Award. He ranked in the top-10 nationally in RBI (6th – 81), RBI per game (4th – 1.40) and slugging percentage (10th – .764). He hit 21 home runs in 2022, the second most in a season by a UVA hitter and the most since 2001 (Jon Benick – 20).

The Cavaliers open the 2023 season at Hughes Bros. Challenge hosted by UNCW in Wilmington, N.C. on Feb. 17 against Navy. The program will host its annual Step Up to the Plate event on Jan. 21, 2023, at John Paul Jones Arena.
