CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia catcher Kyle Teel was named a Baseball America First Team Preseason All-American. The Baseball America All-America team is voted on by Major League scouting directors.

Teel started all 58 games at catcher for the Cavaliers as a sophomore in 2022, the second-most starts in a season at the catcher position in program history. He batted .276 with 12 doubles, three triples, six homers and 45 RBI. He walked 41 times, the 12th-most in the ACC. Of his six long balls last season, three were grand slams. His four career grand slams are also the most of any UVA a player in the last 22 years.

Teel spent the summer playing for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, the second-straight year he has earned a spot on the squad. He and UVA Baseball Hall of Famer, Sean Doolittle are the only two Cavaliers to play consecutive summers on Team USA.

The Cavaliers open the 2023 season at Hughes Bros. Challenge hosted by UNCW in Wilmington, N.C. on Feb. 17 against Navy will go on to play UNCW (Feb. 18) and Ohio (Feb. 19) on opening weekend. The Virginia home opener will take place on Feb. 21 against Longwood at 3 p.m., the first of nine-straight games at Disharoon Park.
