CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced that the Virginia volleyball program was a recipient of the 2022-23 USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award on Thursday (July 13).

Thursday’s announcement marks the Cavaliers’ third award in program history and first under Shannon Wells, who is entering her third season as UVA head coach this fall. Virginia earned its first USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award in 2004.

The award, which was initiated during the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative GPA on a 5.0 scale.

Collectively, the Cavaliers achieved a 3.5 team GPA for the 2022-23 academic year.

A program-record 12 UVA volleyball players were named to the 2022 All-ACC Academic Team and 14 student-athletes were named ACC Academic Honor Roll recipients.

“The commitment our coaches make to help their student-athletes pursue the best versions of themselves is evident in the academic accomplishments highlighted today.” said AVCA CEO Jaime Gordon. “Achievement on the court has always been closely tied to success in the classroom which is reflected by the number of championship programs honored.”
