Eight Cavaliers Place At Southeast Open Saturday

SALEM, Va. – Eight members of the Virginia wrestling team placed to lead the squad in season-opening action at the Southeast Open on Saturday (Nov. 4). The tournament was held at the Cregger Center at Roanoke College.

Virginia had five wrestlers place in the open division of the event with a trio of third-place finishers, a fifth-place finish and a sixth-place finish. Dylan Cedeno (157), Jack Gioffre (141) and Kyle Montaperto (125) all finished third. Gable Porter (133) finished fifth and Nick Hamilton (165) finished sixth.

Three wrestlers placed in the freshman/sophomore bracket with Steven Burrell Jr taking second at 197 pounds, Cooper Rudolph taking third at heavyweight and Michael Murphy taking fifth at 165 pounds.

NOTES ON THE DAY

• Steven Burrell Jr. went 3-1 on the day with three bonus-point victories in his debut for the Cavaliers.
• Michael Murphy went 4-1 on the afternoon, while Cooper Rudolph went 2-1 for their place finishes.
• Nick Hamilton went 5-1 and advanced to the fifth-place match but NCAA limits did not allow him to continue.
• Jack Gioffre and Dylan Cedeno both went 3-1 on the day to claim third-place finishes.
• Virginia wrestlers posted eight wins by fall on the afternoon, including two pins from Nick Hamilton.
• The Cavaliers posted 26 bonus-point victories on the afternoon.

“We have a lot of work to do. Our guys need to lock in and be intentional about getting better at their attack areas. We can’t just go in the room and bang. It’s got to be smart and actually be improving every day. I’m not pleased with the way we competed today, but I know it’s a long season and they are a great group. This is the most fun I’ve had around a group in a long time, so I believe in them and I know they can do it. But, our standard is higher than we showed today. We have high expectations for this team and that’s a good thing. It’s our job to give them hard truth with love when necessary. Today was one of those days. There were some bright spots for sure, but again we need to keep the standard high, and we didn’t meet our standards today overall.”
