CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 6 Virginia women’s squash team (1-0, 1-0 MASC) opened the season with a 9-0 victory against No. 15 Georgetown (0-1, 0-1 MASC) on Saturday (Nov. 4) at the McArthur Squash Center.

Both of Virginia’s newcomers, freshmen Clare Minnis and Mili Sprecher, picked up wins in the collegiate debuts. Sophomore Lina Tammam, playing No. 1 on the ladder for the first time in her collegiate career, won 11-7, 11-13, 11-6, 11-1 against Jesse Brownell.

FROM HEAD COACH MARK ALLEN

“A great start to the season for the women. Georgetown is a new varsity squash program but are improving quickly and head coach Tim Lasusa has done a great job adding a lot of strength and depth to their squad this year. With Meagan [Best] and Maria [Moya] in Chile right now for the Pan-American games, and Eliza [Mills] away too, everyone needed to be ready. I was really pleased to see that everyone was well prepared and not one of them took their match for granted.”

“Congratulations in particular to first years Nili Sprecher and Clare Minnis, who both won their first inter-collegiate match for UVA, and both with resounding 3-0 wins.”

“We will now focus on a couple of good days’ training before tapering down for two huge back-to-back weekends on the road for what promises to be some of our toughest matches this year.”
