SANTIAGO, Chile – Virginia field hockey student-athletes Jans Croon, Mia Abello, Madison Orsi, and Daniela Mendez-Trendler competd at the 2023 FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup from November 29 through December 10 at the newly renovated National Stadium Sports Park in Santiago, Chile.

All four were members of the United States’ U-21 squad that won gold at the 2023 Junior Pan Am Cup in Barbados in June.

Team USA competed in Pool D, picking up victories against Japan (2-1) and New Zealand (6-2), but falling against England (5-2). The Cavaliers lost out on advancing from pool play by a one-point goal differential. In the backdraw, the USA opened with an 8-0 win against Canada and posted a 5-1 win against Chile before falling in a shootout to India in the 9/10 designation match.

Mendez-Trendler finished the tournament with four goals, third-most on the US team. Croon scored three.

All four Cavaliers started at least two matches during the tournament and appeared in all six games.

This is the seventh time that the US has qualified for the Junior World Cup. The team’s best showing is a pair of seventh-place finishes in 2005 and 2013.
