CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 1 Virginia women’s swimming & diving team defeated No. 8 NC State (265.5-87.5) and No. 20 North Carolina (272.5-80.5), while the No. 18 Virginia men’s team defeated North Carolina (222-131) but fell to No. 4 NC State (244-109) in a tri-meet that concluded on Saturday (Jan. 20) at the Aquatic & Fitness Center.
Gretchen Walsh continued to set marks for the Hoos as she hit the fastest split in the 50 fly for her leg of the 200 Medley Relay and she hit a new pool record in the 100 free.
WOMEN’S RESULTS
- The Cavaliers opened the day with a 1-2 performance in the 200 Medley Relay, with the team of Alex Walsh, Zoe Skirboll, Gretchen Walsh and Aimee Canny taking first with a time of 1:35.98. The team of Reilly Tiltmann, Jasmine Nocentini, Carly Novelline and Maxine Parker taking second with a time of 1:37.25.
- Gretchen Walsh turned in the fastest split in history for the 50 fly with a mark of 21.50 in her leg of the relay.
- Cavan Gormsen took the top spot in the 1000 free with a time of 9:44.83. She was one of three Hoos in the top four as Sophia Knapp finished third with a time of 9:54.88 and Maddie Donohoe tied for fourth with a time of 9:55.05.
- Virginia took the top three spots in the 200 free with Aimee Canny first at 1:45.61, Alex Walsh second at 1:47.01 and Ella Nelson third at 1:48.18.
- Tess Howley paced the Hoos in the 100 back, taking the top spot with a time of 52.76. Carly Novelline was third with a time of 53.30 and Reilly Tiltmann took fifth with a time of 53.41.
- Gretchen Walsh took first in the 100 free and set an AFC pool record with her time of 46.40.
- Virginia went 1-2-3 in the 100 breast with Jasmine Nocentini taking first with a time of 59.05, Emma Weber finishing second at 59.93 and Zoe Skirboll taking third at 1:01.00.
- The Hoos then went 1-2-3 in the 100 fly with Alex Walsh leading the way with a time of 52.25. Tess Howley finished second with a time of 52.91 and Carly Novelline finished third with a time of 53.07.
- Virginia also went 1-2-3 in the 200 IM with Ella Nelson taking first with a time of 1:59.06. Ella Bathurst finished second with a time of 2:01.17, while Abby Harter was third with a time of 2:01.19.
- The Cavaliers took first in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:13.04 from the team of Aimee Canny, Jasmine Nocentini, Gretchen Walsh and Alex Walsh.
MEN’S RESULTS
- The Hoos opened the day with second-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of Matt Brownstead, Noah Nichols, Tim Connery and August Lamb turned in a time of 1:25.27.
- Sebastien Sergile took a second-place finish in the 200 free to lead the Hoos with a time of 1:35.89.
• Will Cole’s third-place finish paced the Hoos in the 100 back with a time of 47.72. - Matt Brownstead finished second in the 100 free with a time of 42.93, while Connor Boyle finished fifth with a time of 43.96.
- Noah Nichols and Max Iida went 1-2, respectively, in the 100 breast. Nichols finished with a time of 52.38, while Iida finished with a time of 54.13. August Lamb was fifth with a time of 55.86.
- Sebastien Sergile finished first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:46.76, while Noah Nichols finished fourth with a time of 1:47.65.
DIVING
- Lizzy Kaye took second in the women’s 1m to lead the Cavaliers with a score of 294.30. Maddy Grosz took fourth with a score of 271.50.
- Nicholas Sanders led the Hoos on the men’s side with a fourth-place finish in the 3m with a score of 313.15.
