Josephson Honored by IWLCA and ACC
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced Tuesday (April 16) that Mel Josephson of the Virginia women’s lacrosse team has been named Co-Defensive Player of the Week following Virginia’s 13-12 overtime win over No. 3 Boston College. Josephson was also honored by the ACC as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week.
In a thrilling win over Boston College, Josephson recorded 10 saves while maintaining an impressive save percentage of .454 for the game. Her impact was particularly significant in the first half where she made six crucial stops to help build a five-goal lead for the Cavaliers which would help fend off an Eagle comeback that featured a six-goal run in the second and third quarters.
Josephson’s efforts in goal were instrumental in limiting BC’s high-scoring offense to just 12 goals after averaging 17.64 per game coming into Saturday’s contest. An exceptional team performance on the defensive end helped lead UVA to its first win over Boston College since 2016 and its first victory over a top-three opponent since 2015.
The Cavaliers are set to travel to Blacksburg, Va. for their last regular-season matchup with Virginia Tech in the Smithfield Commonwealth Clash. First draw from Thompson Field is set for 7 p.m. on the ACC Network.
