CARLSBAD, Calif. – Virginia junior Amanda Sambach shot 1-under 71 to lead Virginia during the opening round of play at the NCAA Championships at the Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif. The 22nd-ranked Cavaliers shot 13-over 301 and stand tied with North Carolina for 27th place after the first day of competition. Clemson leads the field after shooting 8-under 280.
Sambach got her round off to a solid start, posting birdies on her second and fifth holes. She finished the day with 15 pars and one bogey. She ended the round tied for 189th place. It is her third time competing at the NCAAs. She was 31st as a freshman and 54th last season.
UVA’s other first-round scores include a 4-over 76 from Celeste Valinho, 77s by Jaclyn LaHa and Rebecca Skoler and a 78 from Megan Propeck.
Virginia’s second round gets underway Saturday at 12:22 p.m. PT. UVA will again be paired with Pepperdine and Mississippi State. Those teams will start their rounds from the 10th tee.
Virginia is making its 14th NCAA Championships appearance in the 21-year history of the program. UVA’s best finishes at the NCAAs were back-to-back fourth-place showings in 2011 and 2012. Last season the Cavaliers were in 24th place after 54 holes and did not advance to the final round of stroke play.
