NEWTON, Mass. – The No. 3 Virginia field hockey team (9-1, 3-1) suffered its first loss of the season on the road 2-3 against Boston College (8-2, 3-0) in a tough battle on Friday (Oct.4) at the Field Hockey Complex in Newton, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Boston College found the back of the net first, scoring with 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The Golden Eagles wasted no time in the second quarter scoring what would be the team’s second of two goals in the first half of play. Down at the half, Virginia responded in the third quarter as Daniela Mendez-Trendler netted one for the Cavaliers to cut the deficit in half.In the final minutes of the fourth quarter, Dani Mendez-Trendler equaled the score with an assist from Taryn Tkachuk. Mendez-Trendler netted her second goal of the game and fourth goal of the season to send the Cavaliers into overtime.

The Cavaliers had only six players for the start of overtime as Madison Orsi was assessed a yellow card at the end of regulation, putting her in the box for the first five minutes of extra time.
Boston College was initially awarded a penalty stroke a minute and a half into overtime, but the Cavaliers challenged the call and it was overturned with video review.
Two minutes into overtime, Boston College capitalized on the momentum as Madelieve Drion scored her second goal of the season to edge out the Cavaliers 3-2.
