CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 4 Virginia field hockey team (12-2, 5-1 ACC) picked up a 1-0 victory at home against Miami University (8-7, 5-1 MAC) Sunday (Oct.20) at Turf Field in Charlottesville, Va.

GOAL (Assist)
21:17 Virginia — Mia Abello (Unassisted)

HOW IT HAPPENED
In a quiet first half of play, Virginia recorded a total of eight shots and four corners while Miami University recorded none of the above. With 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter, Mia Abello found the back of the net on a penalty stroke to give the Cavaliers the lead 1-0.

Coming out at the half, both teams battled in the middle of the field to hold the score to 1-0 after three quarters of play. Virginia notched eight shots and five corners in the third quarter alone, again while Miami University recorded none. The fourth quarter was a stalemate leading the Cavaliers to top the Redhawks 1-0 at the buzzer.

This is the second consecutive game in which Abello, a sophomore, has netted the game-winning goal. Two days prior against Syracuse, Abello scored the game-winner in a sudden death shoot-out to give the Cavaliers the victory over ACC foe Syracuse 3-2. The Cavaliers fended off the Miami University Redhawks to become 12-2 (5-1 ACC) with just two road games remaining in the regular season.

FROM HEAD COACH OLE KEUSGEN
“Tough turnaround with Syracuse in overtime and we put like eight miles each in our body. That’s tough on back-to-back weekends so there was a grind today physically, but we knew that obviously going into the game. We also said there’s no way that we don’t walk away with a win on senior day. That’s why even though we didn’t play great in the last quarter, we had the hustle and the belief and also the grind to defend that one goal lead. In that aspect, we did great.”
