BOSTON, Mass. – The Virginia Varsity Four placed third overall and second among collegiate boats at the 59th Head Of The Charles Regatta Sunday (Oct. 20).

The Cavaliers’ V4 raced to a time of 18:01.835 to finish third behind Columbia (17:50.546) and Penn AC (17:56.065), which included UVA alums Eva Frohnhofer and Kate Kelly in the Women’s Championship 4+.

UVA’s Varsity Eight placed 10th overall and sixth among collegiate boats in the Women’s Championship 8+ with a time of 15:56.992. Yale (15:33.857), Washington A (15.:36.343), Washington B (15:45.967), Princeton (15:48.320), and Brown (15:51.670) finished ahead of the Cavaliers among collegiate crews. UVA alum Heidi Long and the Oxford University Boat Club placed 18th overall at 16:19.168.

On Saturday (Oct. 19), senior Sky Dahl helped the US Para Rowing “A” crew to a win in the Mixed PR4+ with a time of 17:14.192.

“Fantastic racing at the Head Of The Charles for our Champ 4 and Champ 8,” UVA head coach Wesley Ng said. “Head racing puts such challenging and fun demands on rowers and coxswains alike and I’m proud of how our group approached this opening regatta. Particular credit goes to our coxswains Brie Joe and Chloe Lee who steered clean courses. We have some clear elements to improve upon and a race at the Princeton Chase on November 3rd to aim for right away.”

The Head Of The Charles course is 5,000 meters along the Charles River, featuring seven bridges, multiple turns and passing in a head-race format. In head races, each crew starts single file about 10-15 seconds apart and the results are based on time.

The Cavaliers return to action at the Princeton Chase on Sunday, Nov. 3.
