CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (14-7, 3-7 ACC) hosts No. 12 Virginia Tech (16-4, 6-4 ACC) on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena in a Smithfield Commonwealth Clash game.

VIRGINIA NOTES

  • The Cavaliers are coming off a 90-72 loss to Syracuse. The game had eight lead changes and six ties in the first half. The Orange held a 41-39 edge at halftime but outscored UVA 49-33 in the second half
  • UVA’s defense allowed a season-high 90 points in Thursday’s game. It was just the second time this season that an opponent scored more than 80 points in a game
  • Virginia is 11th in the nation in rebounding, averaging 44.0 per game (third in the ACC) and 19th in rebound margin (second in the ACC) at +8.7
  • Camryn Taylor had her third 20-point game of the season at Syracuse
  • Taylor has scored in double figures in six of her last seven games, averaging 15.8 points per game in that span
  • Taylor is four rebounds shy of reaching 500 in her career. She had 297 of those rebounds at Marquette
  • Freshman point guard Yonta Vaughn made her second start of the season at Syracuse, dishing eight assists. It was the highest total number of assists in a game by a Cavalier this season
  • Vaughn has a 2.50 assist-to-turnover ratio in conference games (30 assists, 12 turnovers), tied for the ACC lead with Jazmine Massengill of FSU
  • London Clarkson scored 16 points at Syracuse. Clarkson has scored in double figures in three of the last four games. In that same span, she is 17-of-25 (68.0 percent) from the floor, including going 7-of-11 against the Orange
  • Clarkson is averaging 24.0 minutes per game since the loss of Mir McLean. She was averaging
  • Sam Brunelle scored 10 points at Syracuse, her fifth double-digit scoring effort in the last six games. Brunelle has a team-high 14 double-digit scoring games this season (out of the 20 in which she has appeared)

SCOUTING VIRGINIA TECH

  • Virginia Tech is coming off a 66-55 loss at Duke on Thursday night
  • The Hokies lead the ACC in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.18) and have the fewest turnovers in the league, averaging 12.9 per game
  • Elizabeth Kitley and Georgia Amoore both rank in the top 10 in the conference in scoring, with Kitley averaging 17.9 points per game and Amoore with 14.0
  • Kitley, last season’s ACC Player of the Year, is ninth in the nation in rebounding averaging 11.2 per game
  • Virginia Tech won the first meeting of the year between the two teams, 74-66, on January 5 in Blacksburg. Kitley did not dress for the game
  • The teams were tied 32-32 at the half, but the Hokies built up an eight-point lead in the third quarter and held on for the victory
  • Camryn Taylor led the Cavaliers with 18 points. Mir McLean and Sam Brunelle scored 11 apiece. Carole Miller matched her career high with nine rebounds. George Amoore led the Hokies with 22 points
  • Virginia leads the all-time series 51-17, but the Hokies have won five of the last six meetings, including both match-ups last season

SMITHFIELD COMMONWEALTH CLASH

  • The rivalry between Virginia Athletics and Virginia Tech Athletics has a long and storied history dating back more than 125 years within the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Cavaliers and Hokies first faced off on the gridiron in Charlottesville in 1895. First coined the Commonwealth Clash during the 2014-2015 season, the rivalry has expanded and intensified across the 22 sports the two institutions face off in head-to-head competition

  • The Cavaliers play back-to-back road games starting at No. 22 North Carolina on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. in a game that will be televised on the ACC Regional Sports Networks
  • Virginia closes the week at Pitt on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. in a game that will be televised on the ACC Network
  • The Cavaliers return home to host Louisville on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m.
