Cavalier Baseball Pounds Out 16 Hits, Downs Coastal, 8-3

CONWAY, S.C. – – Sean Doolittle struck out the final batter with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to earn his first save of the season and the Cavaliers (2-0) out-hit Coastal Carolina, 16-5, as Virginia held on to defeat Coastal, 8-3, Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Springmaid Beach Resort Tournament. Jacob Thompson earned his first career win on the mound as he one-hit the Chanticleers (1-1) through five innings and struck out four.
“This was a great win for us to beat a quality opponent in Coastal Carolina on their own field. Jacob Thompson and Michael Schwimer pitched well for us and our bats came alive,” UVa head coach Brian O’Connor said. “Coastal made a come-back in the ninth, but we kept our composure and came away with the win.”
Mike Mitchell and Brandon Guyer each finished the game with three hits while Tom Hagan, Doolittle and Tim Henry each had two hits. Jeremy Farrell and Henry both drove in two runs for the Cavaliers.
Thompson and Michael Schwimer one-hit the Chanticleers through 7 2/3innings before Mike Fuentes singled to right field giving Coastal its second base hit of the game. Schwimer struck out four in three innings and only allowed one hit. Shooter Hunt tossed 2/3 of a inning and surrendered two runs on three hits, before Doolittle recorded the last strikeout of the game.
The Cavaliers tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth. Doolittle and David Adams hit back-to-back singles. Beau Seabury then walked loading the bases. Henry grounded out to first base to score Doolittle and Adams scored on an error putting the Cavaliers ahead, 5-1. Seabury scored on an RBI single by Greg Miclat for the 6-1 Wahoo lead.
Guyer’s RBI single in the top of the eighth made it, 7-1. Henry’s RBI double scored Seabury in the top of ninth after an error allowed Seabury to reach as UVa led, 8-1.
Coastal pushed across two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Aaron Verrett’s RBI single scored Tommy Baldridge pulling Coastal within, 8-2. Chris Raber then scored on a wild pitch making it, 8-3. The Chanticleers loaded the bases with two outs before Doolittle struck out Adam Vrable with the tying run on deck.
Virginia took its first lead of the game in the top of the fourth when UVa sent seven batters to the plate. Doolittle delivered the lead-off single and moved to second on a balk. After Guyer grounded out, Adams walked. Farrell then executed the hit-and-run when his RBI single scored Doolittle putting the Hoos ahead, 2-1. Seabury hit into a fielder’s choice to score Adams for the 3-1 UVa lead.
Coastal jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Dom Duggan’s solo home run to left field to lead off the bottom of the first inning. The Cavaliers quickly answered in the top of the second. Adams walked to lead off the second and advanced to third on a two-base error by the Coastal pitcher. Farrell’s sacrifice fly scored Adams tying the game, 1-1.
Andy DeLaGarza suffered the loss for Coastal allowing three runs, two earned and walking five in 3 2/3 innings. Duggan and Verrett both had one hit and one RBI.
Virginia returns to action Wednesday when UVa hosts Old Dominion at 3 p.m. in the home opener at Davenport Field at UVa Baseball Stadium.
