Virginia welcomes Towson to Charlottesville this weekend for a three-game series at Davenport Field. Friday’s first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. while Saturday’s and Sunday’s games are scheduled for 1 p.m. Virginia is coming off a 5-1 set-back against Old Dominion in its home opener Wednesday. Tom Hagan went 3-for-4 at the plate while Sean Doolittle and Tim Henry each had two hits.

Virginia is 5-1 under Brian O’Connor in series openers. Virginia swept an opening series from North Carolina A&T in O’Connor’s first season and took two of three games at UNC Wilmington last season in the opening weekend.

Towson is opening its 2006 season with the trip to Charlottesville this weekend. The Tigers finished last season as the Colonial Athletics Association runner-ups after posting a 34-24 overall record and advancing to the CAA championship game. Towson led the NCAA in home runs last season, hitting 105 as a team. Towson returns five position starters including two-time second team All-CAA selection, centerfielder Adam Heffron, who hit .309 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI. Shortstop Hans Falkenhan hit .293 with 10 home runs and 27 RBI. On the mound, the Tigers return six pitchers including second team All-CAA selection Chris Rhoades, who went 4-2 with a 4.81 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 73 innings. RHP Matt Holley was selected to the All-CAA Tournament team and posted a 7-0 mark with a 3.50 ERA including 26 strikeouts in 46.1 innings.

Towson and Virginia have met twice on the diamond. In 1982, UVa won 19-6, and in 1986 the Cavaliers squeezed out a 9-8 win.

After his three-hit performance against ODU, Tom Hagan is tied for the team-lead hitting .500 (5-for-10) with two doubles and a run scored while junior RF Tim Henry is also hitting .500 (4-for-8) with two doubles and two RBI … Henry currently has a five-game hitting streak going dating back to last season. Left-handed pitcher Mike Ballard brings a 2.57 ERA into Friday’s game having tossed seven innings with four strikeouts. Closer Casey Lambert and LHP Sean Doolittle each have one save on the season … As a team, UVa is hitting .292 and has a 3.33 ERA on the mound including 25 strikeouts in 27 innings … Freshman Jacob Thompson makes his second consecutive start after one-hitting Coastal Carolina through five innings last weekend to earn his first career win … Against ODU, relief pitchers Shooter Hunt and Robert Poutier both pitched three scoreless innings while Hunt had four strikeouts in his second appearance of the season.
