CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Sean Doolittle struck out seven in five innings and finished 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI as Virginia knocked off VCU, 7-1, Tuesday afternoon at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium. Tim Henry went 3-for5 with two runs scored for the Cavaliers who ran their record to 6-1 on the season. It was the first meeting between the Cavaliers and Rams (3-2) since 2003 and first under UVa head coach Brian O’Connor.

“That was a nice win for us against a very good VCU pitcher,” O’Connor said. “We tried Sean (Doolittle) out in a different role today and he responded well. We continued to swing the bat well and had a good mid-week win over a good quality opponent.”

Doolittle (1-0) made only his second career start and his first of the season for the Cavaliers. He two-hit the Rams in five innings and allowed one earned run. Michael Schwimer and Casey Lambert each tossed two scoreless innings with Lambert recording three strikeouts as UVa pitchers combined to strike out 11 batters. Mike Mitchell and Jeremy Farrell each added two hits for the Hoos, who finished with 13 hits on the day.

Cody Eppley took the loss for VCU. Eppley allowed only three earned runs on eight hits and had two strikeouts.

Virginia used a three-run third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Brandon Guyer tripled in Tim Henry and Doolittle putting the Cavaliers ahead, 2-0. David Adams’ sacrifice fly scored Guyer for the three-run lead.

The Rams pulled within, 3-1, when Scott Sizemore walked and stole second and third bases. Joe Meador then singled to left field to score Sizemore.

The Cavaliers capitalized on a VCU error to score three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to go ahead, 6-0. Beau Seabury and Greg Miclat each singled and moved up a base on a passed ball. Tim Henry reached on an error by the VCU first baseman, who mishandled a ball allowing Miclat and Seabury to score as UVa led, 5-0. Doolittle then tripled in Henry to make it, 6-0.

UVa added a run in the bottom of the eighth after Henry tripled to center field to score Mitchell for the final 7-1 margin.

Guyer, Tom Hagan, Seabury and Miclat each finished with one hit. Sergio, Miranda, Sizemore, Tim St. Clair, Meador, Jared Bolden and Trai Harris all had one hit for the Rams.

Virginia returns to action this weekend when the Cavaliers take part in the Charleston Challenge. UVa plays George Mason at 1 p.m. Friday.
