CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-Virginia head volleyball coach Dennis Hohenshelt announced Friday (April 13) that Kayla Sears has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Cavalier volleyball program this fall. A native of Moorpark, Calif., Sears was named a 2011 AAU Junior National All-American.

“Kayla’s an interesting athlete in terms of athletic ability because she’s big and physical,” Hohenshelt said. “We’re going to use her as a left-side player because she’s a 6-2 kid with long arms, something we really don’t have right now on the roster. I really like what she does when she plays and will be a big net presence for us as a left-side hitter. Kayla hits a very heavy ball, has a good arm and can hit out of the back row as well.”

Sears earned All-America status after leading her club team, Point West Volleyball Club 18-S, to a fifth-place finish at the 2011 AAU Junior National Championships in Orlando, the highest finish by a California squad.

She was also named a 2011 All-Marmonte First Team, All-Ventura County Second Team and All-Area Second Team selection from Moorpark High School.

Sears becomes the third member of the 2012 incoming signing class with Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Vivian Burcescu (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), who signed National Letters of Intent in the fall.
