Cavaliers Earn CRCA All-Region, National Scholar-Athlete Honors

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-Eight student-athletes of the No. 4 Virginia rowing team were recognized with Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) honors Tuesday (May 27). In addition, UVa head coach Kevin Sauer was named the CRCA South Region Coach of the Year for the fourth time.
Seniors Constanze Duell (Oberschleissheim, Germany), Brandy Herald (Portland, Ore.) and Sarah Jordan (Flourtown, Pa.) and junior Lizzy Youngling (Westport, Conn.) were named to the CRCA All-South Region First Team, while junior Hemingway Benton (Glencoe, Ill.) was recognized on the second team.
All five were part of the Virginia Varsity Eight that captured the ACC Championship and was named ACC Crew of the Year. Jordan and Herald were named to the All-ACC First Team, while Duell was listed on the second team. This is Jordan’s second consecutive first-team all-region honor.
Sauer led the Cavaliers to their fifth consecutive ACC Championship and 14th in 15 years. He has been named the CRCA National Coach of the Year twice (2010, 2012) and recognized as the ACC Coach of the Year 10 times, including each of the last five years.
Seniors Kaity McCullough (Campbell, Calif.), Sarah McGovern (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) and Catherine Multari (LaSalle, Ontario) were all named CRCA National Scholar-Athletes. All three were recognized for the second consecutive season. McGovern coxed the Second Varsity Eight that included Multari that won the ACC title, while McCullough was in the bow seat of the Varsity Four that accomplished the same feat.
To be eligible for the CRCA National Scholar-Athlete honor, student-athletes were required to have a 3.5 cumulative GPA, be in their second, third or fourth year of eligibility and rowed in her institution’s NCAA or IRA eligible boat for a minimum of 75 percent of the current spring races or race in a conference regatta.
The Cavaliers head to the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana, this weekend. Action runs May 30-June 1.
