VARESE, Italy-Virginia rowing rising senior Lizzy Youngling won gold Sunday (July 27) at the World Rowing Under-23 Championships on Lake Varese.

Youngling (Westport, Conn.) captured gold as part of the U.S. women’s eight that defeated crews from Great Britain, Germany, Australia, Belarus and Poland. Incoming freshman Shawna Sims (Sarasota, Fla.) placed fifth as part of the U.S. lightweight women’s double, the highest American finish in the event ever at the World U23 Championships. She was part of the quadruple sculls crew that earned silver at the 2013 World Junior Championships in Trakai, Lithuania.

Rising junior Sam Casto (Dallas, Pa.) finished fourth in the B final of the women’s single to place 10th overall. She was part of the ACC Champion Second Varsity Eight that finished third at the 2014 NCAA Championships.
