UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – A quartet of Virginia wrestlers placed at the Nittany Lion Open on Sunday with Joseph Martinez leading the way with a second-place finish at 125 pounds in the event hosted by Penn State.
Martinez finished second at his weight class, falling to fourth-ranked Nico Megaludis of Penn State in the finals, while Tyler Askey finished in fifth place at 184 pounds, Sam Krivus finished in seventh place at 141 pounds and Tyler Love finished in seventh place at 197 pounds.
Virginia sent nine wrestlers to the meet with four competing unattached, including Krivus.
Martinez highlighted the day, posting four straight victories that included two major decisions, on his way to the finals at 125 pounds. He then fell to the All-American Megaludis in the championship bout.
Krivus, who was wrestling unattached, posted five victories in his six bouts on the afternoon, with his lone setback coming in the form of a tight 5-3 decision to sixth-ranked James Gulibon of Penn State.
Askey took fifth place at 184 pounds, posting three wins on the afternoon. After falling in his opening bout, Askey battled back through the consolation bracket before taking his second loss of the day in a decision against Penn State’s Kellan Stout to put him in the seventh-place bout, which was a medical forfeit by his opponent to secure the finish.
Love, also wrestling unattached in the meet, finished in seventh place. Love dropped his first bout of the afternoon to Frank Mattiace of Penn before fighting back through the consolation bracket. He posted a pair of tech falls and a fall before facing Mattiace a second time. Love suffered a fall in the waning seconds of the bout to move into the seventh-place bout, which he claimed by medical forfeit.
