No. 3 Virginia Posts Four Wins at Clemson Invite
April 17, 2016
CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 3 Virginia rowing team won four of five races Sunday (April 17) to conclude action at the Clemson Invitational on Lake Hartwell. Overall, the Cavaliers won 12 of 15 races during the two-day regatta.
“We had a pretty good weekend,” Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said. “I thought all the crews responded well to Saturday racing. Ohio State is very good. They got us in the Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight last night, but those two boats put together much better second 1000’s which allowed us to beat good Michigan crews today.”
On Sunday, UVA competed against No. 10 Michigan, No. 19 Syracuse, Oklahoma, UCLA and Penn. The Cavaliers posted wins in Varsity Eight (6:34.3), Second Varsity Eight (6:43.3), Varsity Four (7:29.5) and Third Varsity Eight (6:43.6). The Wolverines (7:19.7) edged the Cavaliers (7:20.3) by less than one second in the Second Varsity Four.
UVA’s Varsity Four and Third Varsity Eight boats each went unbeaten at 3-0 during the regatta. The Cavaliers’ Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four each went 2-1.
“The Varsity Four and Third Varsity Eight did a great job, winning all of their races and the Second Varsity Four ran into a very good Michigan Four for its only loss (0.7 seconds),” Sauer added. “Many thanks to Clemson for hosting 20 teams from all over the country. It’s certainly a formidable task.”
The Cavaliers return to action at No. 8 Texas on Saturday, April 30.
