TEMPE, Ariz. – A late Virginia (2-3) rally fell short on the final day of the Kajikawa Classic as the Hoos fell to San Jose State, 1-0.

An unearned run from the Spartans came in to score in the top of the third inning on a Madison Aurin RBI single up the middle. Cassidy Clark, who reached on an error earlier in the frame, scored the eventual game-winning run from second base.

San Jose State (2-3) pitchers Katelyn Linford and Colette Riggs combined for the team’s first shutout of the 2017 season. Linford earned her first victory of the year after going 5.1 innings and striking out five batters. Riggs came on in the sixth inning and stranded a one-out, Cavalier baserunner.

Virginia drew a pair of walks in their final turn at the plate and loaded the bases with one out. Riggs was able to induce a pop up and a ground out to record her first save of the season.

For the game the Cavaliers left eight runners on base. The Hoos spoiled a terrific starting pitching effort from Lexi Mettler (Turlock, Calif.) who tossed a four-innings of three-hit softball. Allison Davis took over in the fifth and did not surrender a hit in the final three innings.

At the plate, Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) and McKall Miller (Ashburn, Va.) recorded multiple-hit efforts, each going 2-for-3. Senior Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was one of four others to record a hit in the contest after her first career triple in the top of the first inning.

The Cavaliers will have the midweek off and return to action on Friday at the Charleston Southern Tournament. Virginia will play four games, a doubleheader Friday with ETSU and Charleston Southern on and then a double dip with ETSU and UNC Wilmington on Saturday.
