The Cavaliers are coming off back-to-back losses to Georgia (64-61) and Dayton (61-46). On Sunday against Dayton, the game was tied after the first quarter, but the Flyers pulled away in the second, outscoring the Cavaliers 20-12 in the frame. The Cavaliers pulled to within five, 40-35, early in the fourth quarter, but last season’s A-10 champions went on a 10-3 run to regain control of the game and went 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the final 1:30 to close out the game.

A sophomore has led the team in scoring in each of the first four games with guards Dominique Toussaint (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Jocelyn Willoughby (East Orange, N.J.) leading the squad at Dayton. Toussaint has nine assists in the last two games, five against Georgia and four against Dayton, and in the last three games, she has a 12-3 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Hampton opened the season with a 70-66 victory over North Carolina, but fell 82-59 to Elon in its home opener. Monnazjea Finney-Smith tied her career high with 25 points and hit a career-best seven three-pointers as Hampton knocked off North Carolina, earning MEAC Player of the Week honors for her efforts. She hit a pair of 3-pointers on consecutive possessions midway through the fourth quarter to help bring Hampton back from a seven-point deficit for the win.

Hampton was picked first in the Preseason MEAC poll. The Lady Pirates won 20 games and their sixth MEAC Tournament title in eight seasons last year. Three Lady Pirates were selected to All-MEAC squads as Finney-Smith was a first team selection, Jephany Brown a second and K’lynn Willis was a third team selection.

Virginia is 2-0 all-time against Hampton. This is the first meeting between the two schools since 2001.
