Scott and Demarest Pace UVA in Weekend Meets

CLEMSON, S.C.-Members of the Virginia men’s track and field team concluded action at the Tiger Paw Invitational, hosted by Clemson, on Saturday (Feb. 10) at the Indoor Track & Field Complex in Clemson, S.C., in addition to members of the team finishing the final day of the David Hemery Valentine’s Invitational, hosted by Boston, at the Track & Tennis Complex in Boston, Mass.
At the Tiger Paw Invitational, sophomore Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica) finished third overall and second against collegiate athletes in the triple jump with a mark of 16.04m (52-7.5). His season-best performance currently ranks sixth in the NCAA.
“Jordan (Scott) has continued to progress in his primary event this season,” assistant coach Mario Wilson said. “Today was an opportunity to compete against some of the best in the country and he handled the pressure well. It was also an opportunity to preview the competition venue for the ACCs, where I believe bigger performances are to come.”
Senior Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) paced the Cavaliers at the David Hemery Invitational, finishing second overall and first against college athletes in the 5000m with a time of 13:56.66. His performance currently ranks eighth in the NCAA.
Rounding out the Tiger Paw Invitational, junior Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) finished seventh in the weight throw with a mark of 20.46m (67’1.5″). Redshirt junior Oghenakpobo Efekoro (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded a mark of 18.47m (60’7.25″) to place 14th in the event.
Sophomore Sam Young (Lewes, Del.) finished eighth in the pole vault, clearing a season-best height of 4.95m (16’2.75″).
Freshman Ryan Buscaglia (Richmond, Va.) finished 22nd in the 800m with a time of 1:54.64.
In the men’s 200m, freshmen Brandon Outlaw (Moorestown, N.J.) and Alfred Shirley III (Chesapeake, Va.) paced the team, finishing 27th and 29th, respectively. Outlaw recorded a time of 22.29, while Shirley finished with a time of 22.31. Junior Jake Dixon (Falmouth, Maine) finished 35th event the event with a time of 22.91 as freshman Jordan Willis (Williamsburg, Va.) finished 36th with a time of 23.02.
At the David Hemery Valentine’s Invitational, senior Chase Weaverling (Darnestown, Md.) and sophomore Lachlan Cook (Brisbane, Australia) joined Demarest in the top five of the 5000m. Weaverling finished third with a time of 14:05.61 as Cook finished fifth with a career-best time of 14:10.87. Cook’s time placed him ninth on UVA’s all-time performance list.
Graduate student Mike Marsella (Hope Valley, R.I.) paced the team in the mile, capturing a time of 4:01.43. Sophomore AJ Ernst (Marblehead, Mass.) finished 25th with a time of 4:06.14, while sophomore Spencer Dodds (Temecula, Calif.) finished 27th with a career-best time of 4:06.90, senior Kenneth Hagen (Blacksburg, Va.) finished 53rd with a career-best time of 4:10.32 and sophomore Randy Neish (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished 85th with a time of 4:14.31.
Redshirt sophomores Ari Klau (West Hartford, Conn.) and Alex Corbett (Burke, Va.) finished ninth and 12th, respectively, in the 3000m. Klau captured a career-best time of 8:09.45, while Corbett recorded a career-best time of 8:10.76.
Virginia returns to action on February 17 as members of the team compete in the UCS Invitational in Winston Salem, N.C.
