Virginia Quotes

Coach Joanne Boyle

Opening Statement

“Just a tough game tonight. We’ve been playing good basketball up until tonight and I thought we played a solid first half, and then came out flat in the second half. They were just too good. I thought we took possessions off and really never got our offense going. You know, when the other team gets 71 attempts and you get 49, it’s not going to be a good night.”

Is it necessary to pick off one of these top 5 or 10 teams in order to make the NCAA tournament?

“With whatever game we are playing, our goal is to be 1-0 with that team. So, it’s not looking ahead, or what is down the road. It’s being in the moment and taking care of business. Tonight, against Louisville, we played a good first half. We came out the second half and we just did not execute the way we have been executing, and that cost us. So, we have got to clean that up. We have to have efficient, great practices preparing ourselves for the really tough teams that are coming down the stretch.

On lack of feeding to Felicia in the second half compared to the first half:

“Turning the ball over, lazy passes, we were not sharp at all, and that cost us a lot. We were not efficient on that end of the floor. We took quick shots, we weren’t in position, we had lazy passes, and probably everything you can talk about when you’re only scoring 41 points in a game. We have to be sharper. We were sharp in the first half, and like you said, Felicia got touches in the first half, but we were not sharp in the second half.

On damage to the team’s confidence after this loss:

“It’s not going to rock us. We have a resilient team. We have been in these positons before. It’s just getting back on track, starting in practice. It’s raising our bar, getting together and saying we are not going to let this happen again. We are not going to let it happen again. We have to be resilient. This is not a “Oh, I’m going to feel sorry for myself.” Tomorrow, we are going to get in the gym, and we are going to work.

Senior Guard Aliyah Huland El

Was their pressure from playing the #4 team and it beginning as a close game?

“I don’t think so. I think in our preparation we focused on the fact that they are a team, just like any other team that we face. We didn’t care about their ranking. We really just wanted to focus on us.”

On competing with teams like Louisville, Notre Dame, Florida State:

“There was no doubt in my mind that we would win this game. I think that’s the most disappointing point. We fought tooth and nail, and were with them, down 3 at half time. There’s no question in my mind. I have the utmost confidence in my teammates and there was no question, that’s what is disappointing about this loss. But, as coach said, we are going to get back in the gym, we are going to focus on the next play, the next game. Whoever is up next, we will be 1-0 against them.
