CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Zack Gelof (Rehoboth Beach, Del.) collected his third preseason All-America honor on Monday (Feb. 1) after being included on Baseball America’s second team. The Cavalier third baseman is already a first team honoree by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and a second team selection by Perfect Game.

Baseball America annually polls major league organizations’ scouting departments to vote on the team and asks that they make their selections based on performance, talent and professional potential. As part of the preseason All-America process, voters had Gelof tied for the second-best infield arm in its best scouting tools feature.

In a shortened 2020 season, Gelof was atop the Atlantic Coast Conference in total bases (47), slugging percentage (.746) and runs scored (24). He batted .349 (22-for-63 with six doubles, two triples, five home runs and 18 RBI in 18 games. He has started the last 74 games at third base for the Cavaliers including all 56 as a freshman in 2019.

Last week, Baseball America ranked Virginia as the No. 5 team in the country in its annual preseason poll. It was the highest ranking for the Cavaliers since 2016.
