CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (3-8, 0-1 ACC) plays its final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday, Dec. 22 when it plays Texas Southern (0-7, 0-0 SWAC) in Houston, Texas. The game tips at  1 p.m. ET

  • Grad student guard Amandine Toi led all scorers with a 20-point performance at No. 2 NC State on Sunday. It was her third 20-point game of the season
  • Toi has led the team in scoring in each of the last five games and six of the last seven. All three of her 20 point games have come in that seven game span
  • Toi leads the ACC in minutes played, averaging 35.7 per game
  • Toi has moved into the team lead in field goal shooting percentage at 44.3 percent. She went 9-of-38 (23.6 percent) through the first four games of the season. In the last seven, she is shooting 51.0 percent
  • Junior point guard Taylor Valladay has scored in double figures in two of the last three games. She is averaging 10.0 points per game in the last three contests
  • Sophomore guard Kaydan Lawson has come off the bench to lead the team in rebounding in two of the last three games including at NC State
  • Lawson has also scored in double figures in two of the last three games, averaging 9.0 points per game in that span
  • Wednesday’s game features former Houston Comets teammates Cynthia Cooper and Tina Thompson squaring off in the city in which they played together from 1997-2000, winning four WNBA Championships in that time
  • Both players are USC alumna and both have had their jersey’s retired by their alma mater (No. 44 for Cooper and No. 14 for Thompson). Cooper played for the Women of Troy from 1982-86 while Thompson was there from 1993-97
  • Both are members of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame
  • Associate head coach Karleen Thompson was an assistant coach with the Houston Comets from 2005-07 and was elevated to and served as head coach from 2007-08
  • Assistant coach James Posey played for the Houston Rockets in 2002-03


  • Texas Southern has had three of its last four scheduled games canceled due to COVID-19 issues within the opposing teams. The Tigers were supposed to play games on Monday and Tuesday at Tulane before hosting Virginia on Wednesday. They also had a game at UCLA canceled last Thursday
  • TSU was picked to finish sixth while guard Ataiya Bridges was named to the 2021-22 Preseason All-SWAC Second Team. The Tigers feature a revamped roster with 12 newcomers and five letterwinners returning
  • Shalexxus Aaron is the only player averaging double figures at 10.7 points per game
  • Niya Mitchell leads the defensive efforts with 7.3 rebounds per game
  • This is the first home game of the season for TSU after playing seven road contests


  • Virginia will take a seven-day break from games for the holidays, returning to action with a home contest on Thursday, Dec. 30 when it hosts No. 20 Notre Dame at John Paul Jones Arena. That game tips at 7 p.m.
