Virginia Hosts Florida State on Thursday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (14-4, 3-4 ACC) closes out a three-game homestand by hosting Florida State (16-4, 5-2ACC) on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va.

• At 14-4 this season, the Cavaliers are tied with UIC for the largest increase in total wins last season [Virginia (+9), UIC (+9), Illinois (+8), ETSU (+7), and Butler (+6)]. The Cavaliers have the largest increase in winning percentage [Virginia (+59.3%), Illinois (+57.4%), UIC (+57.3%), ETSU (+47.0%), and Florida Atlantic (+45.8%)]. Virginia was 5-22 last season with a .185 win percentage
• The Cavaliers are ninth in the nation (second in the ACC) in rebounding with 45.1 per game
• UVA leads the ACC in three-point percentage defense (10^th in the NCAA) with opponents shooting just 24.8 percent. The Cavaliers are 19^th in the nation in field goal shooting percentage defense at 35.1 percent
• The Cavaliers are coming off a 66-50 win against Boston College on Sunday
• Virginia trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half before outscoring the Eagles 41-22 (+19) in the second half
• Virginia went 27-of-28 from the free throw line in the game. The 96.4 percent efficiency ranks 11^thbest in the nation this year in a single game, trailing only the 10 teams who have been perfect from the line in a game this season. Utah also had a 27-of-28 free throw shooting game to tie for 11^th
• London Clarkson set the school record for free throw efficiency in a game, going 14-of-14 from the line. Ariana Moorer previously held the Cavaliers’ single-game free throw efficiency mark with a 13-of-13 performance against Virginia Tech on Feb. 19, 2012
• Clarkson is the sixth player in program history to shoot 12-of-12 or better from the line, joining Moorer, Monica Wright, Mimi McKinney, Tammi Reiss and Jocelyn Willoughby
• Clarkson scored a career-high 18 points. The 14 points from the stripe alone topped her previous high of 12 points, which she had reached three times in her career. Clarkson was also 2-of-3 from the field
• Clarkson also grabbed eight rebounds, including six offensive rebounds
• Clarkson played one season at Florida State (2019-20) before transferring to Virginia
• Kaydan Lawson had a career-high 15 rebounds. It tied for the second-most rebounds in a game by a Cavalier this season
• Lawson also scored 11 points for her first career double-double
• Sam Brunelle scored the 1,000th point of her career in the third quarter of the Boston College game
• Camryn Taylor comes into the game with 981 points in her collegiate career, 19 points shy of also reaching that milestone. She scored 598 of those points at Marquette
• Taylor scored 17 points on Sunday against BC. She is averaging 15.0 points per game in the last four games

SCOUTING FLORIDA STATE

• The Seminoles have victories over NC State and North Carolina this season but dropped their last game against Louisville, 82-75, and also fell in overtime against Boston College
• Florida State is led by freshman Ta’Niya Latson. Latson has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week nine times this season. She has five 30-point games this season. She was added to the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25. She ranks fifth in the nation in points per game at 24.3, pacing the conference in that category
• Makayla Timpson leads the defensive efforts, averaging 9.0 rebounds per game (fifth in the ACC) and 2.1 blocked shots per game (second in the ACC)
• Jazmine Massengill leads the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.55
• FSU is second in the nation with 6.4 blocked shots per game
• Virginia leads the all-time series 36-20 but the Seminoles have won the last five meetings including a 62-37 loss last year in Tallahassee

ON THE HORIZON

• Virginia plays at No. 7 Notre Dame (14-2, 5-1 ACC) on Sunday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m.
• The Cavaliers will play at Syracuse (13-5, 4-3 ACC) on Thursday, Jan. 26 before returning home to host No. 12 Virginia Tech (14-3, 4-3 ACC) on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m.

• Group tickets for sizes of 20 or more are on sale for all home games. Reserved seats are $10, and general admission seats are $6. A savings of $2 per ticket compared to single-game ticket prices

Full-time faculty & staff are eligible for a 20 percent discount on up to four season tickets.
