CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia football student-athlete Jackson Matteo has been named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List, the annual award bestwowed to the most outstanding center in FBS college football.

Matteo (Ashburn, Va.), a rising senior, is coming off a 2015 season where he snapped the ball on every UVA offensive play but one (at North Carolina). Matteo helped block for one of the ACC’s most dynamic players, Taquan Mizzell, who broke the ACC record for receiving yards by a running back with 721. Matteo and the rest of the UVA offensive line nearly helped Mizzell became the first FBS player since 2006 to rush for 700 yards (29 yards shy) and receive 700 yards in the same season.

The winner of the Rimington Trophy will be selected by determining the consensus All-American center pick from three existing All-America teams. The Rimington Trophy committee will use All-America teams from the Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News and Football Writers Association of America to determine the winner. The winner will be recognized at the Rimington Trophy Presentation at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017.

Matteo is one of eight players from the ACC on the watch list. Clemson (Jay Guillermo), Florida State (Alec Eberle), Georgia Tech (Freddie Burden), Miami (Nicholas Linder), North Carolina (Lucas Crowley), Pitt (Alex Officer) and Syracuse (Jason Emerich) also put players on the watch list from the ACC.
