CLARION, Pa. – The Virginia wrestling team takes to the mat on Sunday to open the 2017-18 season at the Clarion Open hosted at the Clarion University Student Recreation Center by Clarion University.

Wrestling begin at 9 a.m. and runs throughout the afternoon until brackets are completed. Fans can follow the action through updated brackets and results or through a paid subscription stream linked at VirginiaSports.com. The stream is provided by FloWrestling.

CAVALIERS RETURN TRIO OF NCAA QUALIFIERS
The Cavaliers return a trio of NCAA qualifiers from a year ago, including All-American Jack Mueller (Dallas, Texas). Mueller is moving up to 133 pounds this season after advancing to the semifinals and finishing sixth at the NCAA Championships last season at 125 pounds. Also returning for the Cavaliers are Andrew Atkinson (Lynchburg, Va.), a three-time NCAA qualifier at 157 pounds, and Sam Krivus (Greensburg, Pa.), who qualified a year ago at 149 pounds.

Virginia has a pair of wrestlers in the national rankings to start the season with Mueller and Krivus among those recognized in the top 20 by InterMat Wrestling.

LAST YEAR AT THE CLARION OPEN
Virginia opened the season at the Clarion open a year ago with four wrestlers claiming championships. Atkinson (at 157 pounds), Krivus (at 149 pounds) and Mueller (at 125 pounds) joined Chance McClure (Commerce, Ga.) in winning their weight class. McClure wrestled at 197 pounds. Ten more wrestlers placed for the Cavaliers last year in the event, including four who return this season for the Hoos.

The Cavaliers will continue to wrestle on the road next weekend at the Journeymen Duals in Albany, N.Y. Virginia will wrestle in a pair of duals against Kent State and No. 12 Rutgers on Saturday (Nov. 11).
