CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. – The Virginia (0-2) wrestling team got several solid individual performances on Saturday at the Journeymen Duals, but dropped a pair of contests with dual losses to Kent State (5-0) and No. 12 Rutgers (3-0).

Andrew Atkinson (Lynchburg, Va.) and Will Schany (Blair, Neb.) led the way for the Cavaliers with each wrestler picking up a win in both duals. Atkinson won by a pair of decisions at 165 pounds, while the No. 20 ranked Schany won both of his matches at 174 pounds. Schany also posted a win over No. 18 Jordan Pagano of Rutgers to remain undefeated on the season. It was his second win in as many weekends over a nationally-ranked opponent.

In the first dual of the day, the Cavaliers mounted a furious comeback after taking a six-point lead when the opening match was forfeited by the Golden Flashes. Down by eight points at the halfway mark, Virginia rattled off a pair of wins from Atkinson and Schany before Jay Aiello (Chantilly, Va.) pinned Stephen Suglio to vault the Cavaliers to a one-point lead with one match to go. Kent State would pick up a decision in that final bout at heavyweight, however, to claim the 20-18 win.

In the second dual of the day, this one against No. 12 Rutgers, the Cavaliers fell behind early as the Scarlet Knights sent a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers to the mat, including second-ranked Nick Suriano and No. 12 Scott DelVecchio. The Cavaliers didn’t surrender any bonus points through the first four bouts, allowing UVA the chance to get back into the match.

Michael Murphy (Lookout Mountain, Tenn.) picked up a decision at 157 pounds to spark a run of three straight wins, including decisions by Atkinson and Schany’s win over nationally-ranked Pagano, to cut the dual lead to three points for the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers was able to close things out, picking up decisions in the final three weight classes to secure the dual victory.

Members of the squad will return to action, competing as individuals at the MyHouse Classic on Sunday.
