LAS VEGAS – Jack Mueller (Dallas, Texas), the third-seeded wrestler at 133 pounds, picked up four wins on Friday to advance to the semifinals and lead Virginia in action at the Cliff Keen Invitational at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Mueller will face seventh-seeded Josh Terao of American in the semifinals. Terao is ranked No. 13 nationally at 133 pounds, while Mueller is ranked No. 7.

He is one of four wrestlers to advance for the Cavaliers, as freshman Louie Hayes (Orland Park, Ill.), redshirt sophomore Sam Krivus (Greensburg, Pa.) and redshirt junior Will Schany (Blair, Neb.) also advanced to Saturday’s action.

Virginia is 17th in the team standings with 31.0 total points. Michigan is in first place with 90.0 total points, while Ohio State (85.0), Nebraska (73.5), Arizona State (71.5) and Northern Iowa (68.0) round out the top five.

“Today was an absolutely crazy day,” said Virginia head coach Steve Garland. “To be honest, it started very rough for us as a program, but we really brought it on through the end. The day ended really well with Jack (Mueller) advancing to the semifinals and Louie (Hayes) picking up a huge win against a nationally-ranked opponent to advance to the placing rounds. I’m also very proud of Sam (Krivus) and Will (Schany) to come all the way back to wrestle in the placing rounds Saturday.”

Hayes picked up four wins to advance through the consolation bracket, including a win over sixth-seeded Luke Welch of Purdue, after dropping his first match of the day. Hayes is the seventh-seeded wrestler at 125 pounds and is ranked No. 15 nationally, while Welch is ranked No. 14. Hayes will face No. Will Bardezbain of Kent State in his first match on Saturday.

At 149 pounds, Krivus also advanced through the consolation bracket with three straight wins after dropping his opening bout to No. 6 Justin Oliver of Central Michigan. He will face No. 18 Zander Wick of Wisconsin in his first match of the day on Saturday.

Schany, who is seeded 13th and ranked No. 18 at 174 pounds, capped the wrestlers to advance for Virginia as he also fought his way back through the consolation bracket. He picked up four straight wins and will face No. 15 Keaton Subjeck of Stanford in his first match on Saturday.

Day two action begins at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday and fans can follow the action through live stats and video linked at VirginiaSports.com or through the program’s official Twitter account @UVAWrestling.
