CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Three members of the Virginia wrestling program advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Scuffle on Monday, while two more continue to look to place after the first day of competition in the two-day event hosted by Chattanooga.

Redshirt freshman Louie Hayes (Orland Park, Ill.), sophomore Jack Mueller (Dallas, Texas) and redshirt sophomore Sam Krivus (Greensburg, Pa.) all advanced to Tuesday’s semifinals, while redshirt freshman Jay Aiello (Chantilly, Va.) and freshman Brian Courtney (Sayre, Pa.) will continue through wrestlebacks and look to place on Tuesday.

Virginia is tied for sixth in the overall team standings with 46 total points, tied with CSU Bakersfield. Penn State (101), Northern Iowa (81.5), Lehigh (68), Navy (50.5) and Duke (49) make up the top five.

Hayes, who is ranked No. 16 nationally, picked up three wins on Monday to advance and will face No. 4 Darian Cruz of Lehigh in the semifinals. Cruz is the top seed at 125 pounds, while Hayes is seeded fourth.

Mueller, who is ranked No. 4 nationally, picked up a pair of wins on Monday after receiving a first-round bye. Mueller is the second-seeded wrestler at 133 pounds in the event and will face Austin DeSanto of Drexel in the semifinals. DeSanto is ranked No. 6 nationally and is the three seed in the event. Mueller and DeSanto faced each other twice at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational to open December with Mueller winning both matches.

Krivus, who is ranked No. 19 nationally, picked up three wins on Monday to advance to the semifinals at 149 pounds. He will face top-ranked and top-seeded Zain Retherford of Penn State in the semifinal round. Krivus is the fifth-seeded wrestler at 149 pounds.

Courtney went 3-1 on the day, dropping his only match of the day to No. 7 Josh Alber of Northern Iowa in a tight match. Courtney will face Nic Gil of Navy in the wrestlebacks on Tuesday. Gil is the seventh-seeded wrestler at 141 pounds.

Aiello went 2-1 on the day and defeated No. 16 Nathan Traxler of Stanford in the second round. He fell to the fifth-seeded wrestler at 197 pounds, Jacob Holschlag, from Northern Iowa in the quarterfinals. Aiello will face Luke Farinaro of Duke in the wrestlebacks on Tuesday.

In all, 18 wrestlers competed for the Cavaliers at the event on Monday. Ten of those wrestlers advanced to the final round of action on Monday night with four in the semifinals and six in the wrestlebacks for the last bouts of the day. Five saw their tournament come to an end, while the other five advanced to Tuesday’s action.
