Aguilar, Sullivan Selected in Third Round of SuperDraft

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Houston Dynamo took both Pablo Aguilar (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and Sheldon Sullivan (Stafford, Va.) in the third round of the MLS SuperDraft. The Cavaliers matched a school-record and tied Akron and Wisconsin for the most selections by any school in this year’s SuperDraft with four.

Aguilar was the 59th overall pick of the draft and Sullivan was taken seven picks later at No. 66. With teammates Jeff Caldwell and Edward Opoku selected on Friday (Jan. 19), Virginia led all ACC schools with four total draft picks. The ACC had a record, 20 selections, 11 more than any other conference.

In 2003, Virginia’s Alecko Eskandarian (1st Round), David Comfort (3rd Round), Kenny Arena (4th Round) and Jacob LeBlanc (5th Round) were among the school-record four draft picks.

Aguilar scored 14 of his 16 career goals in his final two seasons as a Cavalier. He earned Second Team All-ACC honors as a junior and Third Team accolades this past season. Aguilar elevated his play in the postseason, scoring a golden goal in the Second Round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament and recorded his first multi-goal effort in the First Round of the 2017 ACC Tournament. Aguilar was second on the team with 1,995 minutes played and appeared in all 21 games for the Cavaliers this past season.

Sullivan appeared in 78 games in four seasons for the Cavaliers. From his defensive position, he assisted on three goals in his career including two during the 2016 campaign. In Virginia’s 2014 National Championship run, Sullivan was named to the NCAA All-College Cup Team. He did not come off the field the entire season was credited with an assist on Todd Wharton‘s equalizer in the quarterfinals against Georgetown. This past season he started all 21 games and was fourth on the team in minutes played. The Cavaliers were tied for third in the ACC in 2017 with a 0.86 goals against average.
