No. 9 Cavaliers Place Second at Longhorn Invite

AUSTIN, Texas – No. 9 Virginia finished second at the Longhorn Invite Saturday (April 28) on Walter E. Long Lake in Austin, Texas.
No. 3 Texas won the event with 126 points, followed by No. 9 Virginia (126), No. 8 Iowa (123), Oregon State (114), No. 18 Oklahoma (105), UCF (103), Alabama (95) and Miami (93).
The Cavaliers won three of four finals, two of which counted in the team scoring. Texas placed second in three events and won the Varsity Eight, which awarded the Longhorns 66 points to edge the Cavaliers.
“We did a good job today, winning three of four finals,” Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said. “The Varsity Eight had a good step in the right direction with a win in the heat, but fell short in the final, something to keep striving for. Many thanks to the University of Texas and coach Dave O’Neil for being great hosts.”
Virginia defeated runner-up Texas in each of its three finals wins. The Cavaliers posted a 7:41.082-7:44.554 win in the Second Varsity Four. UVA topped Texas 7:40.269-7:43.183 in the Varsity Four and 6:52.691-6:56.789 in the Second Varsity Eight. UVA gained 44 points for its first-place finish in the Second Varsity Eight and 22 points for its victory in the Varsity Four.
Texas (6:41.034) bested Iowa (6:45.954), Virginia (6:54.762) and Oregon State 7:00.331 in the Varsity Eight.
In Session I on Saturday, the Cavaliers won all four of their heats against Alabama, Iowa and UCF. UVA posted wins in the Second Varsity Four (7:19.453), Varsity Eight (6:23.075), Second Varsity Eight (6:32.269) and Varsity Four (7:14.501).
Virginia will compete in the ACC Championships on Sunday, May 13 in Clemson, S.C. UVA has captured eight consecutive ACC championship regattas and 17 of 18 ACC titles overall.
