UVA Wins Ninth Straight ACC Rowing Title

CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 7 Virginia continued its dominance in the Atlantic Coast Conference by claiming its ninth consecutive ACC Rowing championship Sunday (May 13) on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
Virginia swept all five races to finish with 99 points followed by Syracuse (77), Duke (72), Notre Dame (69), Louisville (64), Clemson (41), North Carolina (29), Boston College (22) and Miami (22).
The Cavaliers have won 18 of the 19 ACC championship regattas and 73 of the 80 championship races. Tonight’s finals were held on a sunny 90-degree evening with a crosswind of 1.2 to 3.0 miles per hour.
“Really amazing. We had a tough week with final exams the last week and a half,” Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said. “I was a little bit worried about how much juice they would have, especially on this second race of the day. But, they really stepped up in a big way and held on, raced well and did a nice job. I’m proud of them. Nothing is easy. Our team really embraces hard work and we upped the work from last year, and took that mantle on, embraced it and did a really good job.”
UVA’s Third Varsity Eight started the Grand Finals by defeating runner-up Louisville by over nine seconds, 6:32.136-6:41.398.
The UVA Second Varsity Four posted a winning time of 7:13.485 to beat second-place Notre Dame (7:16.483) by almost three seconds.
UVA’s Varsity Four topped Duke (7:12.866) with a time of 7:06.980 for its sixth consecutive ACC Grand Final victory. The winning time marked the fourth-fastest in the history of Varsity Four at the ACC championships.
The Cavaliers’ Second Varsity Eight avenged last year’s loss to Syracuse by defeating the Orange, 6:25.382-6:28.202, in its Grand Final.
In the premier race of the day, Virginia’s Varsity Eight outdistanced runner-up Syracuse, 6:19.454-6:23.318 for its ninth straight win at the ACC championships. Louisville (6:25.309), Duke (6:26.433), Notre Dame (6:26.956) and Clemson (6:35.898) rounded out the top six.
UVA’s Varsity Four was named ACC Crew of the Year, while Kevin Sauer was named ACC Coach of the Year for the 12th time.
Heidi Long (Buckinghamshire, England), Jane Hudson (Sandy, Utah), Ellie Stewart (London, England) and Izzi Weiss (Chicago, Ill.) were named to the All-ACC Rowing first team. Morgan Rosts (Jordan, Ontario) was a second-team selection.
UVA won each of its five heats in morning preliminary action. UVA gained wins in the Varsity Eight (6:24.519), Second Varsity Eight (6:32.707), Varsity Four (7:14.828), Second Varsity Four (7:17.532) and Third Varsity Eight (6:35.877).
