CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Wake Forest junior righthander John Hendricks threw a complete game and struck out eight to lead the Demon Deacons to a 3-2 victory over the University of Virginia baseball team. Hendricks allowed only two earned runs on seven hits and no walks to improve his record to 11-2 on the season. With the victory, Hendricks ties the Wake Forest single season record for wins, which was previously set by Moe Bauer with 11 in 1950. The Cavaliers fall to 26-19-1 overall and 5-13 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Demon Deacons improve to 32-17 overall and 11-10 in the ACC.

Wake Forest opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Andrew Riepe and Will Rikard both drew walks, then advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Chase Voshell delivered a two-run single to left field to put the Demon Deacons up 2-0.

Virginia tied up the game with two runs of its own in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, senior third baseman Brian Sherlock (Medford, N.J.) hit a solo homer to left center, his 10th on the year. Senior outfielder E.J. Anderson (Mechanicsville, Va.) followed with a homer to right field, his ninth on the season, to tie the score at 2-2.

The Demon Deacons scored the final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning. Scott Daeley singled to left field with one out, then moved to third on a single by Ben Danosky. Daeley would then come in to score on an RBI groundout by Jon Palmieri. The Cavaliers best chance to score the remainder of the game came in the eighth when Sherlock hit a fly ball to deep center field, but Wake Forest center fielder Daeley made a leaping catch at the wall to preserve the lead.

Danosky was the only Wake Forest player with more than one hit, as he went 2-for-5, while both Anderson and senior second baseman Ryan Gilleland (Forest, Va.) went 2-for-4 for Virginia.

Cavalier junior righthander Bradley Nuckols (Crozier, Va.) suffered a tough loss, as he allowed only one run on two hits in four innings, while striking out six and not allowing a walk. Sophomore righthander Kevin Shrout (Murrysville, Pa.) also pitched well for UVa, allowing two runs on three hits in five-plus innings while striking out six.

Virginia and Wake Forest will continue their three-game series tomorrow, Apr. 25, with a 2:00 p.m. contest.
